Grieving for the loss of a pet, whether through death or enforced separation, can be a sad and difficult experience. Life once filled with the love and friendship of a pet may suddenly seem very empty and feelings of despair and loneliness are not uncommon.
Sometimes it helps to share these feelings with someone who knows from personal experience how distressing the loss of a pet can be, and who will listen with compassion and without judgement.
Pet Bereavement Support Service
In 1994 SCAS developed the Pet Bereavement Support Service when a need was seen for support for those suffering the loss of a beloved pet. Between 1998 and 2013 the PBSS was jointly run by SCAS and Blue Cross. Since 1st January 2013, the PBSS is solely run by Blue Cross. NB: Make sure the Blue Cross link here goes to http://www.bluecross.org.uk/2083/pet-bereavement-support-service.html
The Pet Bereavement Support Service (PBSS) is dedicated to offering support and understanding to bereaved pet owners through a national network of trained volunteer telephone and email befrienders, all of whom are ready to help. All calls and emails are treated confidentially. Calls to the support line on 0800 096 6606 are free for the UK only (including northern Ireland). The support line is open from 8.30am - 8.30pm everyday. All calls are free and confidential from a landline. If calling from a mobile phone, some phone networks may charge. Support is provided by trained volunteers. The service does not offer a counselling service but is able to offer emotional support and information for pet owners who may be experiencing the loss of a pet. You can also email the Pet Bereavement Support Service on firstname.lastname@example.org.
The Ralph site was set up by vet Shailen Jasani (MA VetMB MRCVS DipACVECC) in July 2011 as a not-for-profit website that provides support to pet owners around the loss of a beloved companion with downloadable and printable resources.
Helpguide.org was started in 1999 by co-founders Jeanne and Robert Segal. Their website contains an entire section on pet loss with some very helpful information on the loss of a pet.
Living with Cancer
This is where you can celebrate your pet as a cancer survivor or you can post your story on our Facebook page
This is where you can pay tribute to a beloved pet that you have lost to cancer and thereby create a lasting memorial.
To create your special memorial you will need to email the details to us together with a photograph (if you choose) of your pet. We just ask for a minimum donation of £10 for each memorial. This will be put towards funding the Animal Cancer Trust aims which will ultimately help us gain a better understanding of cancer and provide better treatments in the future.
In return you will have a lasting tribute on our website for your special friend. Please remember that photographs should be your own and not have any copyright restriction. The Animal Cancer Trust reserves the right to edit any memorials as necessary.
